Tim Schafer is one mad son of a gun, albeit genius mad son of a gun. He and his team of Double Fine Productions created the legendary and one of the most awesome games that got hugely overlooked, Psychonauts. If you have not played that one, first of all stop right here and go play it, we urge you, at least get it for later.
Done? Okay, now on Brütal Legend, this is basically a fan letter written in the enemy’s blood to the heavy rock genre of music, and everything is just mad and wow about it!
You are Eddie Riggs (voiced by the great Jack Black), who is a roadie, a hidden stage and show engineer who basically makes other sissy tween “stars” look like the hero to the world. Then some mad magic happens one day and he is sucked into a Heavy Metal World of Rock ‘n Roll, where it’s your job to protect it from the looming evil (read: shitty music!)
Tim Schafer apparently loves hard metal and also he really finds it silly as well, both of that shows in the game progress, but worry not people if you don’t have any idea about music and its legends, still the game has so much for you, especially the humor! While you may not get every joke, basically music related, but it has a huge arsenal of just pure general humor stuff that alone makes it very enjoyable.
The game is in third person mode with real time strategy, hack n slash and racing genres mixed in, and it works basically like God Of War games just a bit more madder and a little comically weird, if you could believe that!
With 23 main missions and over 30 side missions that include having a hot rod race against a demon, helping a canon operator land his marks, teaching some cavemen how to rock n roll to get your own troops etc.
It’s mad, it’s unique, it’s interesting, its humor, its unabashed fun, its Tim Schafer and Jack Black guys!
Developed by the Double Fine Productions, directed by Tim Schafer and published by Electronic Arts and Double Fine Productions for PS3, X360, PC, OS X and Linux. It was released on October 2009 for PS3, X360, on February 2013 for PC and on May 7 2013 for OS X and Linux.
To those who know, Tim Schafer and his team from Double Fine Productions alone have the credibility to expect the unexpected from their titles like Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and now Brütal Legend. It is something that one can only feel, not describe, so just have a go at it.
