Tim Schafer is a legend, with so little title works he has created an aura, a genre of madness with a dash awesome gameplay mechanics and treatment.
People post some big shot action star’s or some hot bod models pics in their wall rooms (its still a thing right? We hope so!) but we pray our daily life’s morning start with rock and roll, face melting hymn of servitude to this guy’s pics (well not exactly but the pics of his works, its kinda the same thing in our heads).
Manuel “Manny” Calavera, just call him Manny, he is the travel agent in the Eight Level of the Underworld, the Land of the Dead!
It is here that people are sent to the final realm, the ninth level, the land of Eternal Rest. If you happen to be a good guy then you get a number nine ticket to board a train that takes like minutes to reach the haven.
But if you were not a good person, then you are sent to travel there by feet, which takes four years to complete and almost everyone loses their mind or life-force in the insanity and hopelessness, they have to suffer.
This young pure hearted girl, Meche whom Manny likes and knows to be a good person is given the feet ride to the haven because of a system that is being rigged.
Manny finds out about this and starts up his journey to look for Meche and get her rightful passage.
It’s a story, it’s a game, its an experience that all the humanity should have and memorized to their brain cores.
The game is based on Aztec beliefs of dead and the underworld as its story plot drive and it is given the touch of noir films, old noir films like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.
The characters of this game are represented in a Calaca like manner, it’s basically an adventure game and uses plot solving and clue finding and deciphering heavily in its game progress.
The game is built on pre rendered, static backgrounds upon which active important and 3D animated things are placed, you do not get any HUD or something to guide you for clues. Manny just turns his head at the thing or person that holds some to major interest for the plot.
Its basically playing out an old timey, noir film plot, riddled with great storyline, interesting exploration and overall awesome and one of a kind experience.
Developed by LucasArts under Tim Schafer’s direction and then later by the Double Fine Production for the remastered version, it was published by Lucas Arts and Double Fine productions for PC, OS X, Linux, PS4, PS VITA, Android and iOS.
It was initially released in October 1998 and then again in January 2015.
Umm, nothing much, just if you want to play one of the most awesome games ever made, then do give it a twirl or whatevs!
That was sarcasm, please go and buy it!
