Trine is a series of side-scrolling action platform and puzzle games in a fantasy setting. The player controls three protagonists: Zoya the Thief is armed with bow and arrow. Additionally, Amadeus can move objects with his magic without touching the objects. The three characters were visiting the Astral Academy for different reasons. They meet the first time at an ancient magical artefact and all of them were touching it at the same moment. This magical artefact is called Trine and at the moment the three protagonists were touching it, their souls were bound together and from then on they two of the characters are locked up inside the Trine while one can reside in the world. Bound together they start off for finding a way to break the spell and get free again.
On their way they have to solve many exciting puzzles and to defeat monsters. The magical world of Trine has many mystical secrets to discover. The player can only control one of the three characters, but it is possible to switch the playable character as required. The story is that the three Vikings Erik, Baleog, and Olaf have been kidnapped by aliens and are trying to escape the alien ship.
